Attached to my Phone?

I was always fascinated with cellular phones. The first cell phone that my family owned was this little Sony Erickson phone. Thinking back, the only thing I thought that it was good for was for the game “Snake.” The first phone I had was a Blackberry in grade 9, and since then, I’ve always had a Blackberry.

My phone is always on me. You never know when you’ll get a text message, a BBM or a phone call. My mom always told me to keep my phone on me at all times just in case she has to get a hold of me. I didn’t think too much of it at the time because I just used my phone to play games or to send the occasional text. Other than that, it was just a nuisance to make sure that it was with me and to not misplace it.

There were girls and even some guys in my class who were always seen with their phones. I remember this one instance where a girl dropped her phone, picked it up, and inspected it to see whether it was damaged or not while saying, “my poor baby.” I thought it was silly how attached people could become to an electronic device. It wasn’t until recently when I forgot my phone at home that I realized how incomplete I felt without it. Throughout the day I would dig through my purse to see if my phone was in there or even feel my pockets involuntarily. It’s not a good feeling forgetting your phone. When I got home to find my phone on my bed, there were two missed calls, seven new text messages, three BB messages and six e-mails. I guess it goes to show how much I use my phone and depend on it to stay up to date.

I am at the point now where if I leave my phone in my car, I have to go back and get it. Sigh. I’m long overdue for a trip to a secluded area with no reception or internet. Can’t wait for the summer.
